Description

Summary PHP/MySQL Developer – Review & Modernize Existing Web Application We are looking for an experienced PHP/MySQL developer to review an existing web-based workplace information system that has been operating successfully for many years. Our first priority is to determine whether the existing code and database provide a good foundation for a significant modernization and expansion, or whether the age/quality of the code would make further development impractical. What We Want to Build We want to modernize the existing system into an easy-to-use workplace safety training and content platform used by multiple client companies and their employees. The expanded platform would ultimately include: * Separate company accounts with multiple employees/users * Administrator and employee access levels * A library of weekly workplace safety talks and other content * Ability to assign safety talks/training to employees * Short quizzes and completion tracking * Employee training history * Company-level reporting on participation, completion and quiz results * Searchable content libraries * PDF/downloadable materials * English and French content * Modern, mobile-friendly user and administrator dashboards * Ability for our administrators to upload and manage new content * Potential for additional authentication/access options for larger corporate clients The existing system already performs some of these functions, so we do not want to rebuild functionality unnecessarily. First Step – Review the Existing System We would like the selected developer to review the existing PHP/MySQL application and determine: * Quality and maintainability of the existing code * Condition and structure of the database * Security and compatibility with current technology * Whether the system can reasonably support the functionality described above * What portions could be retained versus what should be modernized or replaced * Whether continuing with the existing platform makes financial and technical sense We would then like a recommendation and rough development approach. If the existing application is a suitable foundation, there is an opportunity for the selected developer to continue with the modernization and development work. Experience We’re Looking For Strong experience with PHP, MySQL, custom database-driven web applications, existing/legacy codebases, authentication/user permissions and modernizing business applications. When applying, please provide examples of existing PHP/MySQL applications you have taken over and modernized, not simply applications you have built from scratch. We are looking for a practical developer who will first determine how much of our existing investment can be retained before recommending significant new development.
