Description

Summary We’re a boutique corporate law firm that advises startups, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and emerging companies. We’re looking for a software engineer who can help design and build custom legal automation products and internal systems. The right person should be comfortable using AI-assisted development tools. The core systems should be maintainable custom software, not workflows built primarily in Zapier, Make, Bubble, or other no-code platforms. Existing APIs and third-party services may be used where appropriate. Potential Projects The work may include: (1) Document-generation systems that produce agreements and corporate documents from structured questionnaires and firm-approved templates. (2) A private precedent and clause bank that generates new documents using our vetted language rather than AI-created legal language. (3) Client-specific knowledge systems that securely analyze each client’s corporate records and answer questions using only that client’s documents, with clear source citations. (4) Automated workflows for routine corporate actions, including board approvals, equity grants, officer appointments, hiring documents, and similar matters. (4) Client intake, engagement-letter, payment, signature, and matter-setup systems Productized legal-service portals that allow clients or referral partners to purchase and begin standardized legal services. One early use case may involve a platform for professional speakers that generates tailored agreements, riders, and related documents from firm-approved templates. What We Need The right person should be able to: (1) Translate legal and operational workflows into clear technical requirements and practical product architecture (2) Build, test, deploy, and maintain full-stack web applications (3) Create structured questionnaires, conditional logic, document assembly, and approval workflows (4) Generate properly formatted Word documents from approved templates without inventing substantive legal language (5) Integrate services such as Google Workspace, Microsoft Word, Clio, Stripe, electronic-signature platforms, and other APIs (6) Develop source-grounded AI retrieval systems with citations and strict separation between client data (7) Implement appropriate authentication, access controls, audit logging, backups, error handling, and secure data storage (8) Deliver code in a firm-controlled repository with documentation that allows another developer to maintain and extend it (9) Help prioritize projects based on cost, complexity, revenue potential, and time saved Ideal Background Strong candidates will have experience with several of the following: (1) Full-stack application development and cloud deployment (2) Effective use of AI-assisted development tools (3) Document automation and Word template assembly AI retrieval systems, RAG, vector databases, and source citation Secure multi-tenant or client-segregated data systems (4) API integrations, databases, authentication, and background processing SaaS or internal business application development (5) Data privacy, access controls, audit trails, and secure handling of confidential information Experience working with law firms, corporate legal departments, contract lifecycle systems, or document-generation platforms is preferred, but strong relevant engineering experience may be sufficient. When Applying Please include: (1) Examples of similar systems you personally built (2) Your specific experience with document automation, AI retrieval, or workflow applications (3) The technology stack you would consider for this work and why (4) How you use AI tools in your development process (5) Whether you personally perform the work or use subcontractors Your hourly rate or preferred project structure Please do not submit a generic AI-generated proposal. We’re interested in candidates who can identify the major technical, security, and product risks in these projects and explain how they would approach them.
